Start from Scratch
No racquet? No kit? No problem!
Whatever your background, however unfit you may be, all you really need to get started is a pair of trainers, a T shirt and leggings, shorts or jogging bottoms and a water bottle. No need to wear white!
Age really is just a number when it comes to tennis. Many people from all walks of life who play regularly took up the game when well into their adult life, including retirees. A number of clubs run free or low-cost open days for beginners (usually in the Spring) to try tennis and most coaches will not only lend you a racquet for a couple of hours but also give you some tips about how to acquire one that's best for you. Second hand options can be a good bet via the usual well known web sites.
If you can afford it then the fastest way to start playing is to sign up for group coaching at your local club. Joining a club will also help you find other beginners to play with, will allow you to play all year round and put into practice what you learn at coaching. Some clubs also offer pay and play tennis and there are also parks across the county where you can play if you don't want to join a club straight away.
What are you waiting for? Don't be shy, give it a go!
